Quick Cures For Heartburn

In people with reflux, and its accompanying symptom of heartburn, the muscle used to seal off the stomach either relaxes before it's supposed to or is weak, leading to acid rising into the throat area. Chronic heartburn can be dangerous and needs a doctors care, however when heartburn and reflux are temporary or mild there are several ways to deal with it.

Eat low-fat protein

High protein, low-fat foods like skinless turkey or chicken breast, skim milk, fish and dry beans reinforce the valve that guards your oesophagus.

High fat foods, such as chocolate however, weaken the muscle.

Other foods which relax the muscle are tomato products and caffeinated drinks.

Loosen your belt

A tight belt or waistband can constrict digestion leading to heartburn.

Raise your bed

Raising the head of your bed 6 inches encourages gravity to help keep stomach acid in place.

Use antacids

Antacids are popular for heartburn but should be used in mild or temporary cases.

Eat Right

Eat your last meal of the day at least three hours before going to bed and keep it as small as possible.

Avoid fried, fatty or spicy dishes.

Drink Right

Drink a glass of water at the first sign of heartburn.

Take advantage of gravity

Wedge your mattress or put the head end of your bed on 15cm blocks.

Extra pillows won't do the trick.

Stay Loose

If wearing pyjamas avoid too tight waistbands.
