Use Ibuprofen
Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) which can reduce the pain and inflammation around the affected joint.
Aspirin however can make gout worse by slowing the elimination of uric acid.
Remove pressure
When pain strikes keep the affected joint elevated and at rest.
Use ice
Apply an ice pack which will soothe and numb the pain.
If the pressure of the ice pack itself is painful, use a towel or sponge as a cushion.
